The photograph
Amber approach
Photographed into a low sun, this landing Boeing 737 is reduced to shape and light. The sky behind it is a single field of amber, brightest above the tail, and the aircraft's metal skin picks up a narrow rim of gold along the wings, winglets and fuselage. The landing gear hangs ready, the flaps are extended and the runway is only seconds away.
Below the aircraft the landscape falls into silhouette: trees, rooftops and a line of approach lights glowing green in the grass, with a fence running across the foreground. The long lens compresses everything into layers, which gives the picture its painterly depth.
The photograph relies on exposing for the bright sky rather than the aircraft, which keeps the amber colour rich and turns the 737 into a crisp silhouette with only its edges lit. Nothing in the sky has been added or replaced; the colour is the light of that evening.
It is one of the warmest images in the collection and a strong statement piece for living rooms and dining rooms. Because almost the entire frame is a smooth tonal gradient, it prints especially well at the largest sizes.
Photographed on 26 July 2025 with a Sony α7R IIIA at a focal length of 200 mm.
