The photograph
Over the lagoon
Most of this photograph is landscape. A TAP Air Portugal Airbus is moments from the runway, gear down, its red-and-green tail the only strong colour in the scene. Behind it, bands of water, marsh and dunes stretch to the horizon, and the sea beyond flashes silver under a heavy sky.
The edit is cool and restrained, almost monochrome in the land and water, which lets the aircraft's livery and the bright line of the horizon stand out. Long, horizontal layers give the image a calm, panoramic rhythm despite the darkness of the sky.
The silver band of reflected light on the water lifts what would otherwise be a dark, brooding scene. The landing aircraft is small but sharp, its gear and flaps ready, with the lagoon's channels guiding the eye towards it.
It is a print with a strong sense of place, suited to living rooms and studies, and especially meaningful for anyone who knows the landscape behind the runway.
Photographed on 16 August 2025 with a Sony α7R IIIA at a focal length of 600 mm.
