The photograph
Head-on in the haze
Head-on approach shots are all about symmetry, and this one is pared back to the essentials. The Boeing 737 hangs dead-centre, wings perfectly level, winglets upturned at each tip, landing lights glowing and gear extended. Around it there is nothing but a soft, warm grey haze that darkens gently towards the corners.
Because the long lens looks through a lot of air, the image has a soft, atmospheric character rather than razor-crisp detail, closer to a graphite drawing than a technical record. That softness is part of its charm and is reproduced faithfully in the print.
Heat and moisture rising from the ground on a warm day soften long-lens images like this one. Rather than fight that effect, the edit embraces it with a warm grey tone and a gentle vignette, producing an image that feels like a memory of an approach rather than a technical record.
Best suited to calm spaces and to sizes up to 40 × 60 cm, where the atmosphere reads as intended.
Photographed on 26 July 2025 with a Sony α7R IIIA at a focal length of 571 mm.
