The photograph

Named for a novelist

Portugal's flag carrier names its aircraft after notable Portuguese figures, and this Airbus carries the name of the Nobel-winning novelist José Saramago beneath its cockpit windows. The photograph frames the aircraft close as it turns on the taxiway: the "Air Portugal" titles and red-and-green livery sweep across the top left, the Star Alliance mark sits by the door, and the engine intake fills the lower right.

Warm, dry grass forms the background, adding an earthy tone that suits the livery's reds and greens. The detail is excellent, from the painted name to the spiral on the engine spinner.

Painted names are easy to miss from a terminal window, but a long lens and a turning aircraft bring them into view. The cockpit windows, door frames, sensors and stencils around the nose all hold sharp detail at large print sizes.

A thoughtful gift for a reader, a Portuguese aviation enthusiast or anyone who appreciates the stories carried on an airliner's skin. Two crew members are visible behind the windscreen.

Photographed on 16 August 2025 with a Sony α7R IIIA at a focal length of 600 mm.
