The photograph
Tower watch
This is one of the quietest frames from a long night on the apron. The aircraft, a Dassault Falcon trijet, sits perfectly square to the camera: tailfin rising like a mast, horizontal stabiliser spread wide, the centre engine's intake visible between the two side-mounted engines. Behind it, the control tower glows with its own floodlights while other parked aircraft and a stand number fade into the dark.
The composition is deliberately symmetrical. Everything is arranged around the vertical line of the fin, from the striped cone placed under the tail to the pools of light on the concrete. The warm sodium tones of the apron contrast with the cool white of the fuselage, giving the picture a theatrical, stage-lit quality without any change to the scene itself.
As a print it works best where it can be read from a distance: a hallway, a study or an office wall, where the strong central axis anchors the space. The white-border layout emphasises the symmetry; full bleed makes the night feel larger.
Photographed on 26 July 2025 with a Sony α7R V at a focal length of 35 mm.
