The photograph
Starburst stand
A single floodlight mast does all the work in this photograph. Its lamps flare into a sharp star, and its light falls across a Dassault Falcon trijet parked alone on a dark apron, picking out the long swept wings, the S-shaped intake of the centre engine and the curve of the cockpit glass.
Everything else falls away into near-black, with only a few distant lights on the horizon and a line of cones at the edge of the stand. The cool, almost monochrome tones and the large field of dark space give the picture a calm, gallery-like presence.
Starbursts like these come from photographing bright points of light with a narrow lens aperture. Here the effect is crisp and symmetrical, and it gives the mast the look of a lighthouse watching over the parked jet. The tone is cool and steely throughout.
This is a print for refined interiors: a study, a dressing room or a minimalist living space where a single strong image is preferred. The white-border layout gives it a classic photographic presentation; full bleed lets the darkness wrap the wall.
