The photograph
Vapour in the grey
Climbing out of Faro on a cloudy September day in 2020, this large business jet leaves two smoky trails from its engines that drift back and down through the frame. The aircraft is pitched up steeply, gear still extended, its long swept wings and clean white fuselage sharp against the clouds.
The palette is quiet and cool: blue-grey cloud, soft white highlights and the faint warmth of the jet's skin. A gentle vignette keeps attention on the aircraft and its trails.
Exhaust trails like these appear when hot engine gases meet cool, moist air, and they rarely last more than a few seconds. Catching them at full length, still connected to the aircraft, gives the picture its sense of motion and atmosphere.
A minimal, atmospheric print that works well in calm, contemporary rooms.
Photographed on 13 September 2020 with a Sony α7 III at a focal length of 300 mm.
