The photograph
Climbing into the storm
Photographed at Faro Airport in September 2020, this TUI Boeing 737-800 is climbing and turning away from the camera into a sky thick with grey cloud. The airline's sky-blue livery and the red smile on the tail stand out vividly against the muted, smoky tones around it.
The edit darkens the edges of the frame so the eye is drawn into the centre, where the aircraft sits small but sharp, split-tip winglets curved upwards. The type, "Boeing 737-800", is painted on the rear fuselage. It is a picture about weather as much as aircraft: a reminder that flying is always a negotiation with the sky.
This image comes from the photographer's 2020 series at Faro, made on an overcast day when cloud gave every departure a dramatic backdrop. Its 6000 × 4000 pixel original supports all four sizes, with 60 × 90 cm best appreciated from a little distance.
A moody, atmospheric print that suits darker walls and rooms with cooler colour schemes.
Photographed on 13 September 2020 with a Sony α7 III at a focal length of 250 mm.
