The photograph

Flaps down, gear down

Shot with a long lens as the aircraft passed overhead on approach, this frame cuts in close on a Jet2.com Boeing 737 in jet2holidays branding. The wing slices diagonally from top left, its trailing-edge flaps fully extended, and the red-and-orange sunburst on the winglet catches the light at the tip.

Beneath it, the engine, the main gear and the nose gear hang in perfect detail against a pale, almost white sky. The airline's slogan runs along the fuselage, partly hidden by the wing, which keeps the picture from becoming an advertisement and turns it into a study of shapes.

The pale sky gives this photograph a clean, almost studio-like background, so every structural element of the wing and undercarriage reads clearly. The winglet's sunburst and the airline lettering supply just enough colour to warm the composition.

The bright, neutral background makes this print easy to hang in light rooms and Scandinavian-style interiors, and the diagonal energy works well in a gallery grouping.

Photographed on 26 July 2025 with a Sony α7R IIIA at a focal length of 200 mm.
