The photograph

Harp and engine

Shot low and close under the wing, this photograph turns one of Europe's most familiar liveries into something dramatic. The Ryanair harp glows gold on the tail, the airline's name runs in huge dark letters along the fuselage, and the engine intake, its fan blades clearly visible, dominates the lower half of the frame.

Floodlights rake across the aircraft from the side, polishing the cabin windows into a row of amber lozenges and throwing hard shadows beneath the wing. A green cone marks the engine, and in the background a business jet sits under its own pool of light, with the lights of the town beyond. The registration, EI-EMD, is painted near the tail.

Floodlit night work like this needs a steady position and careful exposure to keep detail in both the bright fuselage and the dark sky. The engine's fan blades, the wing root and the cabin windows all hold crisp detail, which makes the image a strong candidate for the 60 × 90 cm size.

A bold, high-contrast print for anyone who flies these jets, works with them or simply loves the everyday machinery of air travel.

Photographed on 26 July 2025 with a Sony α7R V at a focal length of 65 mm.
