The photograph
The long line
This is the airport at its most orderly. A Ryanair Boeing 737 stands nearest the camera, airline name bold along the fuselage, and behind it a line of identical blue tails with gold harps steps back along the terminal into the distance. A faint red light trail runs along the ground where a vehicle passed during the exposure.
Two-thirds of the frame is deep, empty sky, broken only by the mast lights and their starbursts. That balance between a dense band of aircraft and an open field of night gives the image a calm, almost graphic quality.
The faint red trail along the ground is a vehicle's lights recorded during the exposure, a small trace of life on an otherwise sleeping apron. It adds a thin line of warmth across the base of the picture.
A strong choice for a long wall or above a sofa, and especially effective in the 60 × 90 cm size.
