The photograph
Under the floodlights
Standing behind a parked airliner at night, the photographer lined up the aircraft's centreline with the control tower beyond. The tower's banks of floodlights blaze above the tail, turning the fuselage into a deep silhouette edged with light, while the large engine nacelles either side catch reflections from the apron.
The result reads almost like an architectural drawing: two swept wings, a vertical fin cutting through the tower and the terminal's horizontal lines running the full width of the frame. Small details reward a closer look, from the orange cones at the wingtips to the service vehicle tucked beneath the fuselage.
Symmetry this precise is rarely accidental. It takes a patient position on the apron, lined up exactly on the aircraft's centreline, and an exposure long enough to hold detail in the shadows without letting the tower lights burn out. The near-monochrome palette is how the scene looked under sodium and LED floodlight, simply refined in the edit.
The palette is dark and neutral, close to monochrome, with warm highlights. It sits naturally in contemporary interiors with black metal, stone or walnut, and holds up very well at 60 × 90 cm, where the tower's structure becomes a second subject.
Photographed on 26 July 2025 with a Sony α7R V at a focal length of 150 mm.
